Hi! I am the owner, Leila Abel. I am an almost 55 year old mother of two grown men, one who is serving our great country. I’m also a dog and cat mom and am absolutely smitten with my Cavapoo, Hank.
Additionally, I am a Class A residential builder, with experience managing and owning small businesses, which included a new construction cleaning company.
Our team provides handyman work, upgrades, remodels, and new builds. My company is small, however, that allows me to concentrate on outstanding customer service that goes above and beyond most others.
My goal is to provide outstanding customer service, serve neglected consumers, and to give back to the community. While it’s true that businesses must make money to survive, that is not my only goal.
Yes, my customers have my personal number and I’m personally available to discuss your project before, during, and after. Having trouble choosing items? I’ll even go shopping for you or place the order for your online choices for you. With us, it’s personal. You will be provided an agreed upon allotted budget, but you will not be limited to three styles in three colors. You don’t get cookie cutter here.
Regarding neglected customers, there are many in our communities who struggle to keep a roof over their heads, much less are able to take care of additional home repair expenses, which can be costly. I am currently looking into financing options for customers who may not have the perfect credit score, or needs to to fill a monetary gap, or who simply does not want to use their available cash.
To help everyone, I attempt to keep our prices low; I do not mark up purchased materials. Unfortunately, have no control over the increasing price of materials. According to an analysis of BLS PPI data, provided by Associated Builders and Contractors, of 30 products considered, there’s been a 39.6% increase in overall construction costs. My team recently volunteered with Simply Angel’s, a small volunteer organization that serves veterans of all branches.
I am currently working on a project with Old Dominion Humane Society, to provide an upgraded outdoor play enclosure for their resident pups. I regularly volunteer and donate to One by One Deathrow Dog Rescue. I also foster for them and multiple shelters as well.
Something I enjoy, that most people don’t, is editing. I have done beta reading for my friend, Andrew Sweet. If you like sci-fi, you should check him out. You may find my name inside the cover of a few.
My biggest wish is to address homelessness. I know I can’t end it. But, my life would have been so different if my brother, Gary Russell Garrett II, hadn’t provided me with an affordable, stable place to live. So, I would love to start a nonprofit organization (NPO) to provide temporary housing to veterans, single parents, recovering addicts, and anyone who needs a boost while they’re trying to get or stay on track.
I was kicked out of high school during my senior year. I earned my GED that same year. Two years later, I returned to high school and earned my high school diploma. Shortly after, I became divorced and a single mother. The father moved to a non garnishment state, leaving me with the bills and no child support. We moved annually. Years later, I had my second child and I started college at Germanna. But, I soon found myself in a similar situation as before. The struggle was real. It’s very worrisome wondering how you’re going to feed your child and where you’re going to live. One tiny house had no AC; I couldn’t even afford a window unit. It was like an oven. So we would sleep on the linoleum floor in the kitchen to try to stay cool.
We continued to move every year until we became homeless. A friend had an extra room, where the boys slept & I slept on a chair. Luckily, I found two rooms to rent in someone’s house. The boys and I lived there until my brother bought some land and a trailer, which he set up for me and I rented it for years. He helped me find a job as a government contractor. Then I was finally able to purchase a house closer to town/work. But, land and trailer will always be my home. And 17 years after I started college, I received my Bachelors degree. I moved immediately onto my Masters in Business Administration.
I always wanted to build a house. I thought it would be ‘cool’ to build something from the ground up. My grandfather and father had a construction business years ago, called One Way Construction, which is where I took the name. When I told my brother I wanted to build a house, he transferred a lot he had to me so I could build on it. I haven’t built on it yet. My brother passed away Dec 31, 21, though he lives on in everything I do because I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for him.
